HP Pavilion TX1209
Do you still remember about Tablet PC? This gadget form is like notebook, but has touch screen, so the input process - like writing or drawing - can be done above the screen uses stylus. But if you rather forgot with Tablet PC, we can understand it. The Tablet PC popularity nowadays is decline if compared to the launch time in 2002. IDC data also shows that sale of Tablet PC in 2007 is around 3,3 million units, or only 1,2% from total sale of all PC in around the world.

But the Tablet PC sale fact doesn't make big manufacturer delays their newest Tablet PC launch. One of it is HP which launches Pavilion TX1209. This US$ 1484 gadget has 12,1 inches screen with widescreen format, and equipped by AMD Turion TL-58 (1,9GHz), RAM DDR2 1GB and graphic card nVidia GeForce 6150 (onboard).

First time use it, we directly impressed with HP accuracy in designing this gadget. To change from notebook to Tablet PC, the process is so easy because the axis which felt smooth and flexible to be turned around. You wouldn’t get difficulty to change screen display (from landscape to portrait position and on the contrary), because the existence of arrow symbolic button in screen side. HP also carefully designs every button (Power, WiFi, and the multimedia application) in sides of notebook so that easy to access in notebook and also Tablet PC mode.

But when applies it, we also discovers some TX1209 lacking, mainly when working as Tablet PC. One of them its weight which reaching 2,1 kgs, so heavy for 12,1 inches notebook class. Besides we also discover that the air output from heat firing canal felt hot enough. Both constraints make the usage of this peripheral as Tablet PC felt unable to please.

Its performance as notebook also can be said average. The battery endurance is also less ideal if you often apply this peripheral outside room.

Honestly, we are not a Tablet PC fans, and the presence of HP Pavilion TX 1290 not changing our opinion. In performance side, this product is not special, and still be added by it weight and temperature which bothering it use. The presence of Multi-touch touch screen technology applied by iPhone also makes touch screen technology in tablet PC felt very old.

Toshiba Portege M700 and Dell Latitude XT Review

A few months ago, Dell Inc. shows to public the video about their first laptop which able to be turned into tablet PC. Its name, Latitude XT. This is Dell laptop model most expected by the enthusiasts.

But, Dell Latitude launch is one day overlapped by Portege M700: Toshiba 9th generation tablet PC. Toshiba tablet convertible PC generations started by Portege M205 at 2004. Then evolution becomes Portege M400 which introducing optical activator and standard voltage chip.

Now Portege M700 is Toshiba first tablet PC using light emitted diode (LED) backlit screen which has touch screen feature. Same touch screen ability also owned by Dell Latitude XT. Screen diagonal measure of both tablet PC is also same, 12,1 inchs. So do the screen resolution (WXGA , 1.280 x 800 pixels).

Toshiba touch screen technology can support usage of fingertip and also stylus pen. Portege M700 can detect input method and automatically changes input method from pen to fingertip and on the contrary. If both methods traced, Portege will prioritize pen usage to avoid unintentional touch.

LED backlit screen has anti-glare layer which makes clear picture and easy to seen either at inside and also outside room with various area condition. LED backlit screen produces good picture quality and rich colour saturation. Toshiba claims WXGA widescreen have 30 % more detail compared to standard XGA screen.

Meanwhile, Dell Latitude screen has two choices of light source: LED backlit and cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp gives brighter light, that is 400 nit (level of light), equivalent with candela per meters², suited for eyesight outside room. LED backlit gives 220 nits, for inside room.

Dell Latitude XT has equal specification with Fujitsu LifeBook T2010 and Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet. All three product doesn’t have optical activator and the weight is below 1,8 kilograms. XT uses Ultra Low Voltage Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 (1,2 gigahertz) chip and 1 GB DDR2 RAM. Its also applies Radeon Xpress 1250 from ATI and hard disk 120 GB. Its selling price estimated $ 2499 per unit.

Meanwhile, Toshiba Portege M700 has higher specification, that is Intel Core 2 Duo T75001 (2,2 GHZ) processor, RAM DDR2 2 GB, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, DVD SuperMulti, and hard disk 160 GB SATA (5.400 RPM). With the retail price $ 1799 per unit.

Presence of this two touch screen tablet computers becoming strengthens the assumption that touch screen now becomes trend. Touch screen technology rockets when Apple launch iPhone and Microsoft introduce Surface PC. Dell now having experiment their own touch screen technology. The screen with sensors which able to trace fifth of the user finger at least has just emerged next year.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61: Lenovo Raises the Tablet PC Bar

These days convertible tablet PCs are becoming more than just a niche of the mobile PC market, and Lenovo has been leading the way. With the best keyboard in the industry, very good performance scores, and a sturdy design, the ThinkPad X61 Tablet earns itself an Editors’ Choice nod.

Lenovo stuck with the same tried-and-true design elements for the X61. The magnesium-alloy-backed frame, which protects the system against wear and tear, and its pitch-black ID are identical to those of the rest of the ThinkPad line. Unlike many of its competitors, the tablet comes with a standard-size screen and only one option for resolution, 1.024-by-768. The matte screen finish is more advantageous for office work (as opposed to multimedia), but the screen allows for less vertical scrolling in tablet mode.

With its unmatched full-size keyboard and unique TrackPoint pointing- stick technology, the X61 provides the best typing experience I’ve found on a tablet-hands down. Tablet mode is where the system comes more in line with its competition. Writing recognition is superb and can be further improved by Vista’s Tablet PC Pen Training application. And the included digitizer pen has a rubber grip in the middle, increasing the comfort level.

The X61’s 66-Wh extended battery boosts the unit’s weight to 4,4 pounds. The system is stocked with features, including three USB ports and one FireWire port. The only thing missing is a built-in optical drive, omitted in order to keep the X61 as light as possible. (Those who can’t live without one can opt to purchase an additional 2-pound docking station with a built-in optical drive.) In the end, every convertible tablet is a compromise: Either you want the lightest system possible, or you opt for a heavier system with the ability to watch DVDs and install software.

The X61 also adds mobile broadband. You can choose between Cingular’s HSDPA and Verizon’s EV-DO services, indicated by the antenna bump on top of the screen.

Another concession to keeping the weight down is a low-voltage dual-core Intel processor. Even with 2GB of RAM on board, ULV processors have a tough time keeping up with Windows Vista, which will take up more precious space over time, ultimately slowing down your system. Still, the L7500 processor is a good choice if you want a good balance between performance and battery life. The processor’s low power consumption allowed the X61 to rack up 5 hours 17 minutes on the MobileMark 2007 test. That’s 32 minutes better than the performance of the HP Compaq 2710p, its closest competitor in this area.

Despite a slew of impressive convertible tablet entries, the X61 is standing up to the competition and making the changeover easy for many would-be tablet converts. Lenovo’s time-honored design is still winning formula.

HTC Advantage: Phone, Laptop in One

At 12.7 ounces, this massive device is meant to be an über-PDA—a handheld for adventurous computer enthusiasts who wish they could inject their Treo with steroids. It can replace a laptop in more situations than any other smartphone on the market, but it doubles as a phone only when you wear a headset or use the speakerphone.

Though the Advantage’s top-end 624-MHz Marvell PXA270 processor aced our benchmark tests, the unit still felt pokey. But built-in HSDPA and Wi-Fi didn’t disappoint, grabbing speeds approximating 700 Kbps on the AT&T network. The device’s keyboard is big, but fl at and soft.

The Advantage makes a handy in-car GPS, thanks to its big 5-inch screen and TeleNav’s built-in GPS Navigator 5.1 software. One button press gets TeleNav to reroute you around tie-ups. The device runs Windows Mobile, so you can sync e-mail, calendar, and contacts with Microsoft Outlook 2003 and 2007, and the unit can receive push Exchange e-mail. Office Mobile still needs work, though: I saw formatting errors in some documents, which limits the handset’s usefulness when editing important fi les. You can save data to the internal 8GB hard drive or to a miniSD card.

The Advantage could bridge the gap between handhelds and laptops, but for $900 you might as well buy a laptop and get a free phone from your carrier.

Gateway C-120X: A Pint-Size Tablet PC

Gateway’s flagship convertible tablet PC has a little brother now. The 12-inch widescreen Gateway C-12OX is a pint-sized, low-powered machine that you can actually stand and write with, although performance isn’t where it ought to be for a tablet of this size.

At 4.8 pounds, the Vista-savvy C-12OX is nearly half a pound heavier than the Editors’ Choice Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet (4.4 pounds) - largely because of its integrated optical drive and high-resolution 1,280-by-800 screen. The Wacom digitizer pen has a generic grip, but the overall writing experience on this tablet is good. Most other features are standard; however, there’s a DVD burner.

Though its 2GB of RAM is enough to tackle Vista, it's not enough to make up for the slow 1.06-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo ULV U7500 processor. Also, the four-cell battery's life is unimpressive, posting a measly 1 hour 40 minutes on our DVD rundown test.

The C-120X’s price is on a par with offerings form Fujitsu and Lenovo, which have better components and features. Alas, its performance numbers just don’t live up to its cool design.

Samsung Q1 Ultra: A Just Okay UMPC

The UMPC ( Ultra-Mobile PC) platform is a peculiar mix of a laptop, a tablet, and a handheld PC. The Samsung Q1 was one of the first UMPCs, but it had component and performance flaws. Its new iteration, the Q1 Ultra, is better but still falls short of the mark.

This Vista-enabled, 1.5-pound device has an intensely bright screen. The 1.024-by-600 resolution is fine for watching video or perusing a site like Flickr, but the system lacks the processing power and RAM (just 1GB) to do Windows Vista justice, even with the Aero interface turned off.

The Q1 Ultra's touch-screen functions are enabled by Vista, so you can control the unit with just a finger. Writing a full sentence with the stylus, however, can be frustrating: The hand holding the stylus presses up against the screen, causing some interference. Moreover, the battery ran for only 2 hours 13 minutes playing a DVD via an external, optical drive.

The Q1 Ultra would have a better change of gaining market presence if Samsung dropped the price to $500 or $600. But even at that price, it would be no great bargain.
