Ugobe Pleo Review: Cute Dinobot Is a Robotic Triumph

Years in the making, Pleo, a fully articulated and autonomous robot dinosaur, will charm and wheedle its way into your heart—and it just might help pave the way for a robot renaissance.

Pleo responds to touch, visual stimuli, and even physical position. It can detect whether it is standing up, lying down, or even being hung by its tail. It’s bright blue eyes open and close to simulate life, though they can’t actually see anything. The main image sensor, a color camera, is in its nose, and there are infrared sensors in its snout and mouth.

Pleo’s animation and sounds are well synchronized. Audio emanates from its open mouth, and the panting is usually timed to the rhythmic motion of the bot’s body. The illusion that Pleo is alive is partly spoiled by the near constant whir of the 14 motors embedded in its body. You do get used to the sound, however, and will likely look past the distraction, as I did, to its realistic responses. Pleo comes with a USB port so you can download updates, and there’s an SD card slot for additional tricks and interactions.

Pleo’s battery can take up to 3 hours to recharge, and then you get roughly an hour of playtime.

At $349, the Ugobe Pleo is pricey, but it is one of the most sophisticated personal home entertainment robots on the market today.

Violin Robot from Toyota

Violin Robot Toyota
Have ever heard the analogy about someone is having stiff and haves no soft side? He often is told alike robot. Moving stiff; without heart, and without art soul. But, soon the analogy will not apply again. The reason is, now robot also has art soul.

That is the capability planted by Toyota Motor Corp. at its newest product, namely violinist robot.

The robot form looks alike humanoid robots made in Toyota before. Having white colour with height around 1,5 meter and has two feets. It can run with speeds until 4 km/hours. The movement is also almost alike human.

Besides, the robot fingers have 17 hinges which able to be applied like human finger. Including, depress string at violin fingerboard. The robot also has harmonization ability between left with right arms. So, the robot can stringed violin to play certain songs.

The fingers also very sensitive and can do complicated movements. Like, depress violin strings high-speedly. The robot even can give vibrato effect (vibrant, Red) when its left hand depressing violin string.

At 2005, Toyota also have introduced similar skilled robot. All has sense of music. The robot consisted of two variants. One robot is move with foot, and one another move with wheel. Its size is smaller than “violinist”. Robot by foot has height 120 cm, and the robot by wheel has height 100 cm.

Music instrument played by the two robots is different. The new generation robot is playing violin. While two predecessor robots is play trumpet.

The robot has the ability because has artificial “lip”. The lip can make a move and blows air. Like whats done by human lip. He can coordinated lip blow with hand movement. The robot movement is not only blow. The robot can play some songs with trumpet, like the one is done by human.

The robots not only stand as music player. They also designed as man assistant robot. Of course, its agility and movement precision is extraordinary accurate.

“We wish to make robot which good for man in everyday life,” said Katsuaki Watanabe, CEO of Toyota Motor Corp. Forwards, company that is also one of the biggest car producer plans to add intelligent ability. So, the robot can be functioned as street guide or a tour guide.

For a while, the robots have not ready on market. But, Toyota plans to apply it in hospital and some its sub companies starting next year.

iRobot Roomba 560: A Better Robot Vacuum

The latest robot vacuum from iRobot takes a while to get the job done, but it does boast a slew of new features and improvements.

Though it still relies on a floor-situated Home Base for charging, the Roomba 560 is now beefier in size and weighs a full 8 pounds. The 560’s round, flat body is propelled by two primary wheels, each with its own motor and suspension system. The wheels are larger than in previous versions, allowing the 560 to ride higher off the ground. In addition, iRobot claims that the wheels’ motors provide more torque than ever before, helping the 560 power over plush carpeting and area rugs.

Other upgrades include a bigger dust tray (30 percent bigger, in fact) and a redesigned spinning wall brush for a longer reach. Better yet, the main chassis housing the Roomba’s sensors is now sealed, protecting against overload from dirt and debris. Also new; an onboard scheduler that lets you program the 560 to clean automatically, and a multi-room cleaning function that relies on “Virtual Wall Lighthouse” units you deploy, with care (placement is important), around your house. During my test, the Roomba could vacuum multiple rooms at a time, but sometimes had trouble returning home to recharge.

All in all, even though it takes longer than a regular upright, this robot vacuum is a nifty little cleaning machine.

Wowwee Roboquad: An Odd but Perceptive Droid

With four legs, a body like a 1970s airport terminal, and a longish neck topped off with a flat head, Wowwee 's new Roboquad Confounds and confuses, but ultimately wins you over.

At 14 inches call, the 3-pound Roboquad looks insect-like. It comes with a remote that lets you control movement and, to some degree, the bot’s mood. The Roboquad operates in four different modes-Default, Activity, Aggression, and Awareness- each affecting how the bot walks, sounds, and reacts to stimuli. Auditory input is registered on a single microphone, and the Roboquad's two "eyes" actually house an infrared receiver in one and an infrared transmitter in the other.

In my testing, the Roboquad did a fair job of seeing obstacles. But instead of avoiding them outright, it usually got within an inch or so before backing off and trying an alternate route.

The Roboquad's lack of resemblance to anything living- at home or in nature-makes it something of in oddity; nor is it the cheapest robot toy on the block. But for those who seek an unusual plaything, it satisfies.

Wowwee Robopanda: An Unbearably Cute Bot

You’ve got to give WowWee credit for reaching. Its Robopanda may not exactly be the robot companion of your dreams, but it is, in some crucial ways, the most sophisticated bot WowWee has ever rolled off the assembly line.

Weighing in at roughly 8 pounds with four AA and six C batteries, the toddler-size Panda-like robot toy “wakes up” when you turn it on and talks in a childlike mice. Invisible touch sensors are located on its head, stomach, back, hands, and feet. And believe me, you’ll want to touch the Robopanda (which it constantly and somewhat creepily asks you to do) because it's adorable. Its black and white body is quite animated: The Robopanda can move its arms, legs, head, rubber ears, and eyebrows. Sadly, it's not built crawling.

1 had both a two-year-old and a six-year-old play with the Robopanda. The two-year-old was intrigued, but grew bored and left the room. The six-year-old sat rooted in front of the Robopanda and responded to its every request, often answering it verbally. When I asked, "So you like it?" she nodded quickly, grinning ear-to-ear. In the end, I feel the same way.

Rabbiting On

We're partial to bunnies around these parts, so when we heard someone had hooked one up to Internet, our ears pricked up. This odd little gadget is Nabaztag Tag ($190, nabaztag.com). Put him in a Wi-Fi hot spot and he'll start talking every so often, delivering messages, playing Internet radio or reading website for you. Push the button on his head and he can respond to your voice commands for weather reports and stock quotes. Think of him as an adorable harbinger of the coming age of frivolous electronics.
